The lightest inflatable kayaks, and what each one gives up
A twelvefold spread between the lightest boat here and the heaviest. The weight is easy to look up; what it costs you is not.

Weight is the one specification every inflatable kayak brand publishes, which makes it the easiest thing in the category to compare and the least interesting. The spread here runs from 4 lb to 48.14 lb -- a factor of twelve between two boats that both fit the description "inflatable kayak" and are both sold to roughly the same person.
That spread exists because weight buys three separate things: pressure, material and structure. This page ranks the boats by their published hull weight and then names, for each one, which of the three it spent the weight on.
The short version
The range is 4 lb to 48.14 lb across eight boats, all sold as portable.
Weight buys pressure, material thickness, or structure. The Advanced Elements PackLite and AdvancedFrame are the same brand at opposite ends of that trade.
Published hull weight excludes the pump, paddles and bag. The two boats that publish a full system weight both add roughly 3 to 7 lb.
The Sea Eagle SE370 carries 650 lb on 32 lb of hull -- the best payload-to-weight ratio here, and the lowest working pressure at 1.1 psi.

The second column is what everyone quotes. The rest is what it costs.

The last column is hull weight divided by capacity, times 100 -- how many pounds of boat you carry for every 100 lb it will float. Lower is more efficient. It is computed from the two published figures either side of it.
The efficiency column is the interesting one
Ranking by raw weight rewards small boats, which is not always what you want. The last column above divides hull weight by capacity, and it reorders things usefully: the PackLite is still first at 1.6 lb of boat per 100 lb of payload, but the Sea Eagle SE370 jumps from fifth on weight to second on efficiency, and the AdvancedFrame drops to last-equal despite being lighter than an Intex Explorer K2.
That is not a criticism of the AdvancedFrame. It is spending its weight on aluminum ribs and a defined hull shape rather than on payload, and if you paddle in wind that is the right purchase. It is a reminder that a single-number ranking always hides the thing the number was traded for.
Where the weight physically goes
Pressure
Higher pressure needs stronger seams and thicker fabric, and both weigh something. The Sea Eagle SE370 runs 1.1 psi and uses 38 mil Polykrylar; the Aquaglide Chelan 120 runs a 6 psi drop-stitch floor and carries the extra material to hold it. This is the same reason an inflatable paddle board at 15 psi weighs 17 to 21 lb for something far smaller than any of these boats.
Material
The PackLite is fabric-reinforced polyurethane over a polyester ripstop, which is how it reaches 4 lb. The Excursion Pro K2 is three-ply PVC vinyl laminate over a polyester core, which is a genuinely more abrasion-tolerant material and a considerably heavier one. Neither brand publishes a denier figure, so the comparison stops at the material name -- what those names actually mean is a page of its own.
Structure
The AdvancedFrame's aluminum ribs and the Chelan's drop-stitch floor are both structure rather than skin. They are the reason those two boats hold a line better than the soft-hulled ones, and they are most of the reason they weigh what they weigh.

#1 · Lightest, by a factor of four
Advanced Elements PackLite
A 4 lb kayak that rolls to 11 x 11 x 5 inches. Nothing else in the category is close on either number, and the compromises are exactly the ones you would expect.
Four pounds. The next lightest boat in the registry is 18. This is a fabric-reinforced polyurethane hull at 2 psi, and it is closer to a packraft than to a kayak in how it behaves.
The trade-off
At 2 psi in the side tubes and 1 psi in the floor there is very little structure here. It is a boat for getting somewhere remote, not for a windy afternoon on open water.

#2 · Lightest with a real seat
Sevylor Quikpak K1
The bag is the seat and the seat is the bag. An 18 lb single that packs into a 31 x 9.25 x 17.5 inch backpack -- 57.75 linear inches, comfortably inside the checked-bag line, and you wear it to the water.
Eighteen pounds including the backpack that becomes the seat. Sevylor publishes no working pressure for it, which on a 21-gauge PVC hull is the number you would most want.
The trade-off
Sevylor publishes no working pressure for it. On a 21-gauge PVC boat that matters, because the difference between a hull that tracks and a hull that folds is a couple of tenths of a psi.

#3 · Lightest tandem
Driftsun Voyager 2
The smallest packed box of any tandem here at 26 x 16 x 8 inches -- 50 linear inches, twelve inches of headroom under the checked-bag line, which no other two-person boat in this registry has.
Twenty-seven pounds for a 450 lb two-person boat. Per paddler that is 13.5 lb, which is lighter than every single-seat boat here except the PackLite and the Quikpak.
The trade-off
Twenty-seven pounds and 450 lb of capacity in a 10 ft hull means two adults sit close and sit low. It is a lake and slow-river boat, not a touring one.

#4 · Lightest with a hard floor
Aquaglide Chelan 120
A drop-stitch floor at 6 psi under 3 psi side tubes. That pressure difference is the whole design: a hard, flat floor to stand the boat up, soft tubes to keep the weight down.
Twenty-eight and a bit pounds carrying a 6 psi drop-stitch floor. That is the lightest route to a genuinely rigid hull in this set, and the reason it is worth its price step.
The trade-off
Aquaglide does not publish a packed size for this boat, so you cannot check it against an airline limit before you buy it -- and it is the one number a travel buyer needs most.

#5 · Lightest per pound of capacity
Sea Eagle SE370
Twelve and a half feet of boat, 650 lb of capacity, 32 lb of hull, and it runs at 1.1 psi -- the lowest working pressure of anything here, which is why it is also one of the quickest to pump.
Thirty-two pounds of hull carrying 650 lb. That ratio -- roughly 20 lb of payload for every pound of boat -- is the best here by a distance, and it is what 1.1 psi buys you.
The trade-off
Low pressure means a soft hull. It is forgiving and it is slow. The packed bag is 31 x 19 x 8 inches -- 58 linear inches, so it checks, but it is a bulky thing to carry through an airport.

#6 · Skip this one if weight matters
Intex Excursion Pro K2
Three-ply PVC over a polyester core, 12 ft 7 in long, 400 lb capacity, and 48 lb of it. The most substantial boat Intex makes and by some distance the heaviest thing in this registry.
Forty-eight pounds is nearly twelve times the PackLite and a third more than the next heaviest boat. Three-ply PVC over a polyester core is genuinely tougher material, but you carry every ounce of it.
The trade-off
Forty-eight pounds is past the 50 lb checked-bag line once you add a bag, so this one drives rather than flies. Intex again publishes no packed size and no working pressure.

What is the lightest inflatable kayak you can actually buy?+
Of the boats we hold published specifications for, the Advanced Elements PackLite at 4 lb for the hull and 7 lb for the complete system. Nothing else in this registry is under 18 lb. It gets there by running at 2 psi in the side tubes and 1 psi in the floor, which is very little structure by any standard.
Does a lighter inflatable kayak mean a worse one?+
It means a less rigid one, which is a different thing. Rigidity comes from pressure and from structure, and both cost weight. The PackLite at 4 lb and the AdvancedFrame at 36 lb are both Advanced Elements boats built to different answers to the same question, and neither is wrong.
How much does the pump and paddle add?+
More than people expect, and almost nobody publishes it. The two data points we have are the PackLite, where the complete system is 7 lb against a 4 lb hull, and the iROCKER Nautical board, where the kit is 27 lb against a 20 lb board. Both suggest 3 to 7 lb of accessories, and the difference matters against a 50 lb airline limit.
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty boats. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: pulled the published specifications and the owner's manuals, computed the pump load and the packed volume for every model that publishes enough to compute them, checked the packed sizes against the airline limits you will actually meet, and cited every page we read. The full method.
