Divide 650 lb of capacity by 32 lb of hull and you get roughly 20 lb of payload for every pound of boat. Nothing else in this registry is close, and the reason is the number in the pressure column: 1.1 psi.

Why low pressure produces high capacity

Capacity in an inflatable is mostly displaced volume, and displaced volume comes from big tubes. Ten-inch tubes over 12 ft 6 in of hull is a lot of air, and air is the thing that floats you. Running that volume at 1.1 psi rather than 3 or 6 means the fabric and seams do not have to be built for high pressure, which is where the weight saving comes from.

It also means the boat is soft. Sea Eagle is not hiding this -- the SE370 is sold as a forgiving recreational boat and it behaves like one. It is not fast, it does not track like a hardshell, and it will flex when you put a hard stroke into it.

The only two published numbers of their kind

Sea Eagle publishes a fabric thickness -- 38 mil Polykrylar, which they identify as K80 PVC -- and it is the only thickness figure anywhere in our registry. Everybody else gives you a proprietary laminate name with no measurement behind it.

They also publish an inflation time: eight minutes. That is the only such claim any kayak manufacturer here makes, and it is credible precisely because 1.1 psi is not much pressure to reach. We cannot verify it by calculation, because Sea Eagle does not publish a chamber volume -- but it is a manufacturer making a checkable claim, which is more than most do.

Packed size and travel

Thirty-one by nineteen by eight inches is 58 linear inches, inside the 62-inch checked-bag limit with room. At 32 lb of hull it very probably clears the 50 lb weight limit with a pump, two paddles and two seats in the bag -- probably, because Sea Eagle does not publish a system weight and we will not invent one.

At 77 liters of packed bulk it is a large object in a car boot, considerably bulkier than the Driftsun Voyager 2's 50 linear inches for a boat that carries 200 lb less.

Who this is for, and who should skip it

Buy it if you paddle with someone else, carry gear, or want a boat that is very hard to get wrong. Six hundred and fifty pounds means two adults, a cooler, a dog and a weekend of camping kit with margin left.

Skip it if you want to cover distance efficiently or paddle in wind. Its five one-way valves, three chambers and 34 inches of beam make a stable platform, not a quick one, and a ribbed hull is a better answer to that particular complaint.
