Pumps for inflatable kayaks, and why you need less pump than you think

Every kayak we hold a pressure figure for runs between 1.1 and 6 psi. Every pump we cover reaches at least 11.6. The high-pressure marketing is aimed at somebody else.

Pumps in this category are sold on pressure, because the product that needs a pump most is the inflatable paddle board and a board needs 15 psi. If you are buying a pump for a kayak, almost all of that marketing is aimed at somebody else's problem.

Every inflatable kayak in our registry that publishes a working pressure runs between 1.1 and 6 psi. Every pump we cover is rated to at least 11.6. The question is not whether a pump can reach a kayak's pressure -- they all can, roughly twice over -- but how much air it moves, whether it needs a car, and whether it fits.

Manufacturer figures, read on 2 September 2026. Three of the eight publish no pressure at all, which means there is no way to confirm you have inflated them correctly other than by feel.

The highest number in that table is 6 psi, and it belongs to one drop-stitch floor rather than to a whole boat. Set against it, every pump in our registry has a large margin: the Bravo 4 hand pump is rated to 11.6 psi, the Bravo BP12 to 14.5, and both OutdoorMaster electrics to 20.

The arithmetic we cannot do for you

On the paddle board side of this site we publish stroke counts and minutes, because five of the eight boards publish a volume in liters and inflation time is a function of volume and pressure. The method and its stated simplifications are set out in full.

None of that can be repeated for a kayak. Not one inflatable kayak manufacturer in this registry publishes a chamber volume -- not Sea Eagle, not Advanced Elements, not Intex, not Aquaglide, not Driftsun, not Sevylor. It is the single most conspicuous gap in the category's specifications, and it is why nobody, including us, can tell you how long any of these boats takes to pump up.

The one exception is a manufacturer claim rather than a computation: Sea Eagle says eight minutes for the SE370. It is plausible on the face of it, because 1.1 psi is very little pressure to reach, and it is the only figure of its kind in the category.

Why the second stage is wasted on a kayak

A two-stage electric pump does two different jobs. The first stage moves a large volume of air at low pressure to fill the shape -- 350 L/min on both OutdoorMaster pumps. The second stage moves much less air at much higher pressure to take the chamber up to its working figure, and it is the slow, expensive part: 70 L/min on the same pumps.

On a 15 psi board, most of the work and nearly all of the waiting happens in that second stage. On a 2 psi kayak, the pump has essentially finished by the end of the first. You are buying a capability the boat will never call on, which is not a reason to avoid an electric pump -- it is a reason not to pay a premium specifically for a high maximum pressure.

It also means the specification to compare across electric pumps, for a kayak buyer, is the first-stage flow rate and not the headline psi. The electric pump roundup lists both figures for every pump that publishes them.

The case for a hand pump

A kayak is the one product in this category where we would genuinely recommend pumping by hand rather than tolerating it. At 1.1 to 2 psi the work is modest, the pump weighs 1.65 lb, there is no battery to run flat and nothing to leave charging at home.

It also matches the kind of trip these boats are for. A boat that packs to 27 linear inches exists so you can carry it somewhere a car cannot go, and a pump that needs a 12 V socket is a strange companion for it. What the pump weighs when you are the one carrying it

For a kayak buyer this is the specification that quietly decides things, because the kayaks in this registry are bought by people who care about what a package weighs. Three of the four pumps publish a weight.

Set those against the boats. The Advanced Elements PackLite is a complete 7 lb system, so a 2.7 lb battery pump is a 39 percent increase in what you carry and a 3.6 lb corded one is over half again. The 1.65 lb hand pump is a 24 percent increase, and it is the only one of the three that does not also need a car or a charge.

On a 32 lb Sea Eagle SE370 that arithmetic stops mattering and the convenience argument takes over. Which pump is right is downstream of which boat you bought, and for the light end of the registry it is not close.

The battery arithmetic, and the airline one

The Cachalot 2S carries a 57 Wh internal battery and OutdoorMaster rates it at roughly three average boards per charge. A kayak at 2 psi is a much smaller job than an average board at 15, so the real figure for kayak use is better than three -- but it is not a number the manufacturer publishes, and we are not going to compute one from a claim about a different product.

What matters is the shape of the constraint: a battery pump has a finite number of inflations in it and no way to be topped up away from power. On a day trip that is irrelevant. On four days at a lake with no hookup it is the whole question, and it is the argument for carrying the 1.65 lb hand pump as well as rather than instead of.

The 57 Wh figure has one more use. It sits inside the 100 Wh threshold airlines generally apply to lithium batteries in the cabin, which means it is a pump you can fly with -- in your hand luggage, not in the hold. The flying guide covers the published limits and the rest of what travels badly.

Check the fitting, not just the pressure

The one thing that genuinely does go wrong is fit. Four different valve families appear across the boats we cover, six of our sixteen products name theirs, and ten publish nothing at all. The valve guide sets out who publishes what, and the practical advice is short: keep the adapter that came with the boat, and read a pump's nozzle list before you read its pressure rating.

Rated to 11.6 psi, which is nearly twice the highest pressure figure published by any kayak in our registry, and it weighs 1.65 lb. It moves 4 liters per full double-action cycle from a 2,000 cc cylinder and switches to single action automatically as pressure rises, and it is the only pump here that publishes a cylinder volume -- which is why it is the pump all our stroke arithmetic is based on. The con is a real one and it is about the rest of your kit: 11.6 psi does not reach the 15 psi a drop-stitch paddle board wants, so if you own both a kayak and a board this cannot be your only pump.

The trade-off

The same two-stage 350 and 70 L/min pump architecture as the Shark II, on a 57 Wh internal battery. No car, no cord.

Two point seven pounds with an internal 57 Wh battery, so there is no car and no cord involved -- which is the whole point for anybody using a kayak that packs into a backpack. The two-stage 350 and 70 L/min architecture is far more pump than a 2 psi kayak needs, and that is fine; it simply finishes sooner. Two cons: OutdoorMaster rates the battery at roughly three average boards per charge and there is no way to top it up away from power, and you are paying for a 20 psi capability a kayak will never use.

A two-stage 12 V pump: 350 L/min to fill the shape, then 70 L/min to take it to 20 psi. Those two published rates are what make an honest inflation-time estimate possible at all.

Bravo BP12

A single-stage 12 V piston pump: 160 L/min all the way from limp to 14.5 psi, with an auto-stop. Slower off the line than a two-stage unit, steadier at the top.

A 12 V electric pump rated to 14.5 psi, from the manufacturer that makes the hand pump we recommend most. It clears every kayak pressure in this registry with room to spare. The con is disclosure rather than performance: Bravo publishes no flow rate for it, and without a flow rate there is no way to convert it into minutes, so it is the one pump on this page we cannot put a computed figure against.

The trade-off

One stage means no high-volume phase, so the first two minutes are noticeably slower than a Shark II. Its 14.5 psi ceiling also sits just under a 15 psi board.

What pressure does an inflatable kayak actually need?
Between 1.1 and 6 psi, across every kayak in our registry that publishes a figure. The Sea Eagle SE370 runs at 1.1 psi, the Advanced Elements and Driftsun boats at 2 psi in the side tubes over a 1 psi floor, and the Aquaglide Chelan 120 at 3 psi in the tubes with a 6 psi drop-stitch floor -- which is the highest kayak figure anybody here publishes. For comparison, an inflatable paddle board runs at 15.
Do I need an electric pump for an inflatable kayak?
No. A kayak is the one product in this category where a hand pump is genuinely sufficient rather than merely tolerable, because the pressures are so low. An electric pump is a convenience purchase for a kayak and close to a necessity for a paddle board, which is a distinction the marketing does not draw.
How long does an inflatable kayak take to pump up?
Nobody can tell you honestly, including us. Inflation time is a function of chamber volume and target pressure, and not one inflatable kayak manufacturer in our registry publishes a chamber volume -- so the arithmetic that produces our paddle board figures cannot be run for a kayak. The only manufacturer claim in the category is Sea Eagle's eight minutes for the SE370, and it is the only number we have.
Can I use a paddle board pump on a kayak?
On pressure, easily -- any pump that reaches 15 psi clears every kayak figure in our registry twice over. The question is fittings rather than pressure, because kayaks and boards do not always use the same valve family and manufacturers are inconsistent about publishing which they use. Check the nozzles a pump ships with before assuming it fits.
Is a high-pressure pump wasted on a kayak?
The high-pressure part of it, yes. Two-stage electric pumps spend their expensive second stage taking a chamber from roughly 7 psi up to 15 or 20, and a kayak stops needing air long before that stage does anything. What you still benefit from is the first stage, which is the high-volume one, and on a low-pressure boat that is most of the job.
