Electric or hand pump: the numbers on both sides

The electric pump saves less time than you think and far more effort than you think. Here is both figures for the same five boards.

This is the comparison the category does not make, because making it needs a number nobody publishes: how many strokes a board actually takes.

It is calculable. A dual-action hand pump publishes its cylinder volume -- the Bravo 4 ALU R.E.D. states 2,000 cc, moving 4 liters per full cycle in double-action mode. A board publishes its volume in liters. The rest is division, and the model is set out in full on the methodology page.

The short version
  • A 2 L dual-action pump takes 128 to 192 full strokes to reach 15 psi on the five boards here that publish a volume.
  • Roughly two thirds of those strokes are the easy double-action ones. The last third is single-action against real back pressure.
  • An electric pump saves about 30 seconds of clock time on a 300 L board. It saves all of the effort.
  • Hand pump 1.65 lb, battery pump 2.7 lb. Carrying both costs under two pounds and removes the worst failure mode.

Strokes, broken into the two phases

A dual-action pump moves air on both the push and the pull, which is why it is quick at low pressure. Above about 7 psi the back pressure makes that impractical and you switch it to single action -- the Bravo does this automatically at 5.8 psi. So the stroke count splits into an easy phase and a hard one, and the hard one is what your shoulders remember.

The switchover from double to single action is modeled at 7 psi; the Bravo 4's own R.E.D. mechanism switches at 400 mbar, which is 5.8 psi, so the real split is slightly more weighted toward the hard phase than shown.

Weights, pressures, flow rates and the per-charge figure are the manufacturers' own. The minutes and strokes are computed from those figures.

The Bravo 4's ceiling is the catch

Look at the second row. The Bravo 4 ALU R.E.D. is rated to 11.6 psi, and every drop-stitch board in our registry wants 15.

That is not a defect -- it is a boat pump, and it covers every inflatable kayak here comfortably, since those run 1.1 to 6 psi. But it means a hand pump chosen for a kayak will not finish a paddle board, and the stroke counts above assume a pump that reaches 15. Check the rated maximum against your board's working pressure before you buy either one; the pressure chart has every published figure.

What we would carry

Both, and the reasoning is about failure rather than speed. An electric pump has a battery that runs down, a fuse that can blow and electronics that dislike water. A hand pump has a piston and a hose. Two pounds of redundancy against arriving at the water with a board you cannot inflate is a trade worth making almost every time.

If you are only ever going to own one and you always park at the launch, the corded Shark II is the most pump for the money. If you ever walk to the water, it is the wrong purchase and the battery pump is the only one of the two that works.

How many pump strokes does an inflatable paddle board take?
For the five boards in our registry whose makers publish a volume, between about 128 and 192 full strokes on a 2 L dual-action hand pump to reach 15 psi. The Red Paddle Compact at 200 L is the lightest job at roughly 128; the NIXY Newport G5 at 300 L is roughly 192. Not one of the eleven competitor sites we measured publishes a stroke count for any board.
Is an electric pump faster than a hand pump?
Only slightly, and that surprises people. On a 300 L board our figures are about 5.2 minutes for the two-stage OutdoorMaster against roughly 4.8 minutes of continuous hand pumping. The difference is not speed, it is that nobody actually pumps continuously for five minutes -- so the real hand-pump time is longer, and the real difference is that one of them is work.
Should I carry both?
On a trip, yes, and it is what we would do. A hand pump is about 1.65 lb and it has no battery to run flat, no fuse to blow and nothing to fail electrically. Carrying it as backup to a 2.7 lb battery pump costs you under two pounds of a 50 lb allowance and removes the single worst outcome, which is arriving at the water with a board you cannot inflate.
Do hand pumps really move two liters a stroke?
The good ones publish it. The Bravo 4 ALU R.E.D. states a 2,000 cc cylinder moving 4 liters per full cycle in double-action mode, and its R.E.D. mechanism switches automatically to single action above 400 mbar, which is 5.8 psi. Other manufacturers publish 1.8 L cylinders. Those published cylinder volumes are the input to every stroke count on this site.
