Valve types on inflatable kayaks and paddle boards

Four different valve families appear across the boats we cover. Ten of our sixteen products do not tell you which one they use, including every single paddle board.

A valve is the least interesting part of an inflatable right up until the moment the pump you own does not fit the boat you just bought. Then it is the only part that matters, and the category makes it unusually hard to check in advance.

Four distinct valve families appear across the sixteen products in our registry. Six products name theirs. Ten do not, and those ten include every single inflatable paddle board we cover.

What each family actually is

Boston valve. A two-part screw valve with a one-way flap under the cap. Unscrew the small cap to inflate and the flap stops air coming back; unscrew the whole base to dump the chamber quickly. It is the low-pressure standard, and in this registry the Driftsun Voyager 2 and the Intex Explorer K2 both publish it.

Halkey-Roberts. The spring-loaded twist-lock valve associated with high-pressure drop-stitch construction: a threaded collar for the hose and a central pin that sets whether the valve holds air or releases it. Getting that pin in the wrong position is the single most common reason a board will not inflate. Aquaglide publishes it for the Chelan 120.

Military or high-flow valves. Large-bore valves designed to move a lot of air quickly at low pressure. Advanced Elements publishes two of them on the PackLite and uses the same family on the AdvancedFrame.

Twistlok. Advanced Elements' own floor valve, published on both of its boats in our registry, and paired on the AdvancedFrame with a 1 psi floor pressure-release valve -- a genuinely useful feature that stops an over-enthusiastic pump session over-pressurizing a 1 psi floor.

The Sea Eagle SE370 sits slightly outside this scheme: Sea Eagle publishes "five one-way air valves" without naming a family, which is more than most brands offer and still not enough to check a pump against.

Why it matters more on a board than on a kayak

A kayak chamber runs between 1.1 and 6 psi in this registry. A drop-stitch paddle board runs at 15, and the iROCKER Nautical at 18. Those are different jobs, and they need different valves and different pump heads.

So the disclosure gap lands in exactly the wrong place. The low-pressure products -- where almost any pump would do -- are the ones that name their valves. The high-pressure products, where the pump has to seal properly against a specific fitting to reach 15 psi at all, are the ones that say nothing. What to do about it

Three habits, none of them clever.

Keep the adapter that came with the product, in the bag with the product. It is the only fitting you can be certain matches, and it is small enough that there is no reason to store it anywhere else.

Check what a pump ships with before you buy it rather than after. Pump makers are generally better about listing their nozzles than boat makers are about listing their valves, so the pump listing is usually the more informative of the two.

And if a valve will not seal, check the pin before you check anything else. On a Halkey-Roberts valve the pin has an up position and a down position, one holds air and one lets it out, and a board that will not inflate is far more often a pin in the wrong position than a fault. What is a Halkey-Roberts valve?
It is the spring-loaded, twist-locking valve used on most high-pressure drop-stitch products, where the pump hose screws onto a threaded collar and a central pin controls whether air can escape. In our registry Aquaglide is the only manufacturer that names it, for the Chelan 120's floor. It is the family most paddle board pumps are built around, though as this page sets out, almost no board maker in our registry will confirm what it uses.
What is a Boston valve?
A two-part screw valve with a one-way flap underneath: you screw the cap off to inflate through the flap, and unscrew the whole base to dump air quickly. It is the standard on low-pressure kayak chambers, and both the Driftsun Voyager 2 and the Intex Explorer K2 publish it.
Will any pump fit any inflatable?
Not reliably, and this is the practical problem the page exists for. Pumps ship with a set of nozzles that fit some valve families and not others, and manufacturers describe their valves inconsistently or not at all. The safe habit is to keep the adapter that came with the boat, and to check what a pump ships with before assuming it fits.
Why do so few manufacturers publish their valve type?
We do not know, and we are not going to guess at a motive. What we can report is the count: of the sixteen boats and boards in our registry, six publish a valve description and ten do not, and the ten include every one of the eight inflatable paddle boards -- the category where the pump matters most, because these are the products that need 15 psi.
