Repairing an inflatable: leaks, seams and valves

Almost every failure in this category is a slow leak rather than a puncture, and almost all of them are fixable at the water's edge.

A note on this page before anything else: it carries no product picks. There is nothing in our registry that is a repair kit, we hold no published specifications for one, and bolting a tenuously related product onto a page about fixing something would be worse than leaving it bare.

Every kayak and board in this registry ships with a patch kit matched to its own fabric. Use that one first.

The short version
  • Most 'leaks' are valves, not punctures. Check the valve seating before anything else.
  • Soapy water in a spray bottle finds the rest. Seams first, then the hull.
  • The material decides the adhesive. PVC, polyurethane and Hypalon all need different glue.
  • A pressure drop overnight is usually temperature, not a leak. Compare readings at similar temperatures.

Three things fail, in this order of likelihood

1. The valve

Far and away the most common, and the one most often mistaken for a puncture. A valve that has worked loose in its base leaks steadily around the housing. Most valve types can be tightened with the plastic wrench that came in the box, and a hair or a grain of sand caught under the valve seal will do the same thing until you rinse it out.

Check this before you go looking for a hole. It takes thirty seconds and it solves most of these.

2. A seam

Seams are where two panels join and they are the most stressed part of the product. Welded PVC seams -- which is most of what is in this registry -- are strong but can separate slowly with age, UV exposure and repeated over-inflation.

A seam leak is not a good field repair. It needs cleaning, the right adhesive, clamping pressure and time to cure. If the product is inside a warranty term this is exactly what it is for -- and in our registry only two products publish one.

3. The fabric

The failure everybody worries about and the least common. It is also the easiest to fix: clean the area, let it dry completely, apply the patch with generous overlap, weight it, leave it. A self-adhesive patch will get you home; a glued patch is the permanent version.

Finding the leak

  1. Inflate to full working pressure. A leak at 5 psi may not show at 15.
  2. Mix washing-up liquid with water in a spray bottle -- a few drops is plenty.
  3. Spray the valve and its housing first. Watch for a growing cluster of small bubbles.
  4. Work along every seam next, methodically, both sides.
  5. Then the hull, panel by panel. Listen as well as look; a hiss is often easier to find than a bubble.
  6. Mark whatever you find with a permanent marker before you deflate it. A pinhole is almost impossible to find twice.

Material determines the adhesive

This is where repairs go wrong. The adhesives are not interchangeable and a mismatched one will hold for about a week.

Preventing the repair

Three habits account for most of the damage in this category, and none of them is about the boat:

  • Dry it fully before packing. Mildew on PVC is difficult to remove and it degrades the coating.
  • Keep it out of prolonged sun. UV is the main long-term enemy of PVC, and an inflated board left on a beach all day is also gaining pressure as it warms.
  • Carry it, do not drag it. Abrasion on the underside from being pulled over gravel is the wear pattern you see on old inflatables, and the one most easily avoided.

Questions people actually ask

How do you find a leak in an inflatable kayak?
Inflate it fully, then work over the surface with soapy water in a spray bottle. Escaping air makes bubbles. Do the seams and the valve first, because that is where most leaks are. If nothing shows on the outside, check the valve seating -- a valve that is not fully tightened into its base is the single most common cause of a chamber that goes soft overnight.
Can you repair an inflatable on the water?
A puncture in the fabric, yes -- that is what the patch kit every one of these ships with is for, and a clean self-adhesive patch will get you home. A seam separation is a workshop job. On a multi-chamber boat you often do not need to repair anything on the water: the SE370 and Voyager 2 have three chambers and the AdvancedFrame has seven, so one going soft is an inconvenience rather than an emergency.
Does the glue depend on the material?
Yes, and getting it wrong wastes the repair. PVC needs PVC-specific adhesive; Hypalon needs a two-part neoprene adhesive and the two are not interchangeable. Polyurethane like the PackLite's needs a PU-compatible adhesive. Use the kit that shipped with the product where you can, because the manufacturer already matched it to their own fabric.
Why does my board lose pressure overnight even with no leak?
Temperature, most likely, and it is not a fault. Air pressure falls as air cools, so a board inflated to 15 psi in warm afternoon air will genuinely read lower in the cool of the next morning with not a molecule lost. Check it at a similar temperature before you conclude anything is wrong.
