Air chambers, and what happens when one fails
Kayak buyers are used to three chambers as the floor. Every paddle board we cover has exactly one, and almost nobody selling them mentions it.

Multi-chamber construction is the single best answer to the objection everybody makes about inflatable boats, which is some version of "what if it pops". A three-chamber kayak with one chamber down is an inconvenience and a slow paddle back. It is a genuinely reassuring piece of engineering and the category is right to talk about it.
What the category talks about much less is that the reassurance does not extend to paddle boards. Every one of the eight inflatable boards in our registry is a single chamber, and that is not a cost-cutting decision -- it is what drop-stitch construction is.
- Three chambers is the standard on the inflatable kayaks we cover; the AdvancedFrame has seven.
- All eight inflatable paddle boards in our registry have exactly one chamber.
- Four of eight kayaks publish no chamber count at all.
- A drop-stitch board's rigidity and its single chamber are the same design fact.
- The practical risk is not sinking. It is distance from the launch in a craft that has stopped behaving.

Why a board only has one
A drop-stitch panel is two fabric skins held a fixed distance apart by thousands of threads running between them. Pressurize it and it goes rigid and flat instead of round, which is the entire reason a 6-inch-thick inflatable can hold an adult standing on it.
That structure is one sealed volume by definition. You could not divide a board into three chambers without three separate drop-stitch cores, three valves and three seams, and the result would be heavier, more expensive and less stiff. The single chamber is not a corner being cut; it is the price of the rigidity. The materials guide covers how drop-stitch construction works.
What it changes about how you use each
On a three-chamber kayak, a puncture is a problem you paddle home with. The boat lists, it steers badly, and it gets you back. That is worth something real, and it is why chamber count is a criterion on our flat-water roundup -- the further from the launch you intend to go, the more the margin is worth.
On a board, a puncture that holds air out is the end of the paddle. You are standing on a deflating platform with a leash and a paddle, which is survivable close to shore in warm water and a genuinely serious situation a mile out in cold water. It is the single strongest argument for staying within a distance you would be willing to swim, and for a leash you actually wear.
None of that makes boards dangerous. It makes them different from kayaks in a way the marketing for both does not draw attention to, and it is worth knowing before you plan a long crossing.
The four kayaks that will not tell you
Both Intex boats, the Sevylor Quikpak K1 and the Aquaglide Chelan 120 publish no chamber count. That is half the kayaks we cover, and it is an unusual thing to omit given that the number is a selling point when a brand has a good one.
We are not going to infer a figure. What we will say is that on a page about what happens when something fails, a blank is not neutral -- if the redundancy is the reassurance, an unstated chamber count is an unstated reassurance, and it belongs in the same column as the packed sizes and working pressures those same brands leave off.
