Almost no hand pump in this category publishes its cylinder volume, which is why almost nobody can tell you how many strokes a board takes. Bravo publishes 2,000 cc, and 4 liters per full cycle in double-action mode.

What R.E.D. actually does

A double-action pump moves air on both the push and the pull, which is efficient at low pressure and increasingly impractical as back pressure builds. Most pumps ask you to flip a switch. Bravo's Reduced Effort Device does it automatically above 400 mbar, which is 5.8 psi.

That published switchover point is useful beyond the convenience: it tells us where the phase change actually happens. Our model assumes 7 psi, which is a mid-range figure across the pumps in this category, so the real split on a Bravo is slightly more weighted toward the harder single-action phase than our tables show. We say so rather than quietly using a figure that flatters the model.

The 11.6 psi ceiling is the catch

This is a boat pump. Rated to 800 mbar, which is 11.6 psi, it covers every inflatable kayak in this registry comfortably -- those run 1.1 to 6 psi -- and stops short of the 15 psi every drop-stitch board here wants.

So it is an excellent kayak pump and it will not finish a paddle board. That is not a fault; it is a specification, and it is the single most important thing to check before buying any hand pump. Compare it against your product's published target.

The reliability argument

One point six five pounds, aluminum body, a piston and a hose. There is no battery to run down, no fuse to blow, and nothing that objects to being rained on.

Against a 2.7 lb battery pump, carrying this as well costs about a pound and a half of a 50 lb allowance and removes the worst possible outcome: arriving at the water with something you cannot inflate. It is what we would carry alongside an electric pump rather than instead of one.

Who should skip it

Anybody whose main product is a 15 psi paddle board and who wants one pump only. The ceiling makes it the wrong single purchase, however good the pump is.

How much air does the Bravo 4 move per stroke?
Bravo publishes a 2,000 cc cylinder delivering 4 liters per full cycle in double-action mode -- air moves on both the push and the pull. Above 400 mbar the R.E.D. mechanism switches it to single action, so it delivers 2 liters per stroke from there on.
Will the Bravo 4 inflate a paddle board?
Not to a board's normal working pressure. It is rated to 11.6 psi and every drop-stitch board in our registry targets 15. It will get a board most of the way there and then stop, which is worse than useless on a board you intend to stand on. As a kayak pump it is excellent.
Is a hand pump worth carrying if I have an electric one?
We think so. At 1.65 lb it is a small claim on a 50 lb airline allowance, and it has no battery, fuse or electronics to fail. The failure it protects against -- arriving at the water with a board you cannot inflate -- is the only one in this category that ends the day.
