Sea Eagle SE370 vs Intex Excursion Pro K2

These are the two longest inflatable kayaks we hold specifications for, and they are within an inch of each other. Everything after that diverges sharply.

These are the two longest inflatable kayaks in our registry and they are practically the same length: 12 ft 6 in against 12 ft 7 in, a difference of one inch. If length were the thing that decided a kayak, this page would be very short.

It is not, and what makes this comparison worth writing is how far the two boats diverge from that shared starting point. The Sea Eagle SE370 is 16.14 lb lighter than the Intex Excursion Pro K2 and rated to carry 250 lb more. That combination is counterintuitive enough that it is worth explaining properly, because the explanation is most of what you need to know about how inflatable kayaks work.

Where the sixteen pounds went

Not into capacity, which is the point. The Excursion Pro is half again the hull weight of the SE370 and carries 250 lb less, so whatever the extra material is doing, it is not buying load.

It is buying two things. The first is skin: a three-ply PVC laminate over a woven polyester core is a genuinely heavier construction than a single-gauge sheet, and the core is the part that matters, because it stops a puncture propagating into a tear. The materials guide explains what each of these constructions is doing, and the short version is that Intex has built the tougher boat.

The second is beam. Thirty-six inches against 2 ft 10 in is two extra inches of width, and width is most of what makes a boat feel planted at rest. That is a real, felt difference and it is not free -- the wider hull is part of why the Excursion Pro weighs what it does.

Where the 250 pounds came from

Displacement, and specifically tube volume at low pressure. The SE370 runs large-diameter tubes at 1.1 psi, which is the lowest working pressure anybody in our registry publishes. Low pressure over a big volume is an extremely efficient way to float weight: you are buying buoyancy with air rather than with material.

That efficiency is the whole design and it has a cost, which we would rather state than skip past. A hull at 1.1 psi is soft. It flexes under load, it gives where a firmer boat would hold, and it is slower for it. The capacity gap is the practical one

Rated capacity is a maximum rather than a target, so the figures worth comparing are the two-thirds working loads: 433 lb for the SE370 against 267 lb for the Excursion Pro.

Work that through with two 180 lb adults, which is 360 lb before anybody packs anything. The SE370 has 73 lb of margin left. The Excursion Pro is 93 lb over its working load with nothing in the boat but two people. It is still rated to 400 lb and it will float them -- but it will be sitting deep, and that is the condition this site keeps telling people to avoid. For one adult with fishing gear the arithmetic is far less tight and the Excursion Pro is entirely viable, which is exactly the buyer it suits.

What the pressure gap means at the pump

One more consequence follows from that 1.1 psi figure, and it is the kind of thing nobody thinks about until the first outing.

Sea Eagle publishes both a working pressure and an eight-minute inflation claim, so you know what you are aiming for and roughly what it costs you. Intex publishes neither for the Excursion Pro, which means there is no target pressure to inflate to and no way to tell whether the boat is properly firm other than by feel. On a 12 ft 7 in hull that is a meaningful gap: under-inflate an inflatable and it flexes in the middle, which is exactly the behavior that makes people think inflatables are slow.

Neither boat needs much of a pump. Every pump we cover reaches at least 11.6 psi, which is roughly ten times what the SE370 asks for, so the high-pressure specifications that dominate pump marketing are aimed at paddle board buyers rather than at either of these. The kayak pump page works through what actually matters instead -- volume moved, weight carried, and whether you need a car to run it.

It is also worth noting what neither manufacturer publishes: a chamber volume. That is the figure a real inflation-time calculation needs, and its absence across the entire category is why Sea Eagle's eight minutes is a claim we report rather than a number we can check.

What Intex does not tell you

Three blanks in that table, and they are the same three Intex leaves on every boat it makes: no working pressure, no chamber count, no packed size.

The packed size is the one that costs a buyer most directly. This is a 48.14 lb boat and you cannot check it against a car boot, a cupboard shelf or an airline limit before it arrives. The travel roundup ranks on exactly that figure and the Excursion Pro cannot appear on it.

The chamber count matters differently: it is the specification that tells you what happens after a puncture, and on a 12 ft 7 in boat that goes some distance from shore, that is not a detail. Four of our eight kayaks publish no chamber count, and both Intex boats are among them, while Sea Eagle publishes three.

So which one

Buy the SE370 unless you have a specific reason not to. It is lighter, it carries far more, it inflates faster, it packs to a size you can check, and it tells you what you are buying. For two adults, for gear, for a dog, for anything loaded, it is not close.

Buy the Excursion Pro K2 if the boat lives in a car, fishing is the point, and one or two people travel light in it. The three-ply skin is the better material for hooks and gravel, the 36-inch beam is the steadier platform, and neither of those shows up in a capacity figure. Twelve and a half feet of boat, 650 lb of capacity, 32 lb of hull, and it runs at 1.1 psi -- the lowest working pressure of anything here, which is why it is also one of the quickest to pump.

It is 16.14 lb lighter and rated to carry 250 lb more, which is the single most surprising pair of numbers on this site. It also publishes a working pressure, a chamber count, a packed size and an inflation-time claim, none of which Intex offers for the Excursion Pro. At two-thirds load it gives you 433 lb against 267 lb, which is the difference between a boat two adults can load properly and one they cannot. The cons are pressure and beam: at 1.1 psi this is the softest hull in our registry and it flexes where a firmer boat would not, and 2 ft 10 in is two inches narrower than the Intex, which you notice when you stop paddling.

The trade-off

Low pressure means a soft hull. It is forgiving and it is slow. The packed bag is 31 x 19 x 8 inches -- 58 linear inches, so it checks, but it is a bulky thing to carry through an airport.

Intex Excursion Pro K2

Three-ply PVC over a polyester core, 12 ft 7 in long, 400 lb capacity, and 48 lb of it. The most substantial boat Intex makes and by some distance the heaviest thing in this registry.

Three-ply PVC laminate over a polyester core is the most substantial construction anybody in this registry describes, and the woven core is what stops a puncture spreading into a tear -- which is why this is the boat we rank first for fishing. Thirty-six inches of beam is the widest here and makes it the more planted platform of the two. The cons are heavy and specific: 48.14 lb is the heaviest hull we list and past the 50 lb checked-bag line once bagged, the 400 lb rating leaves only 267 lb of usable load, and Intex publishes no working pressure, no chamber count and no packed size at all.

Which is better, the Sea Eagle SE370 or the Intex Excursion Pro K2?
For most buyers the SE370, and by a wider margin than the price difference suggests: it is lighter, carries 250 lb more, inflates faster, and publishes four specifications Intex withholds. The Excursion Pro wins on two real counts -- a tougher three-ply skin over a polyester core, and 36 inches of beam against 34 -- which is why it is our first pick for fishing and the better boat if it lives in a car and spends time around hooks and gravel.
Why does the lighter kayak carry more weight?
Because hull volume decides capacity and material decides weight, and these two boats spend their budget differently. The SE370 runs large-diameter tubes at a very low 1.1 psi over 12 ft 6 in, which displaces a lot of water for very little material. The Excursion Pro spends its extra 16 lb on a heavier three-ply skin and two more inches of beam rather than on displacement. Length barely enters into it -- the two hulls are within an inch of each other.
Which one is better for fishing?
The Intex Excursion Pro K2, and it is our top fishing pick. The three-ply PVC laminate over a polyester core is the most abrasion-tolerant skin we cover, and hooks near fabric is exactly the situation that construction is for. The counter-argument is capacity: 267 lb of usable load at two-thirds is thin once you add an angler, a cooler and a tackle box, where the SE370 has 433 lb.
Can either of these be checked as airline luggage?
The SE370 can on published figures: 31 x 19 x 8 inches is 58 linear inches, inside the 62-inch economy limit, and the 32 lb hull is under 50 lb. The Excursion Pro cannot be checked with any confidence -- Intex publishes no packed dimensions at all, and at 48.14 lb the hull alone is within 2 lb of the weight limit before a bag, a pump or paddles.
Which is faster to inflate?
The SE370, and it is the only one of the two with a manufacturer claim behind it -- Sea Eagle says eight minutes. The mechanism is pressure: 1.1 psi is the lowest working figure in our registry and there is simply less work to do. Intex publishes no working pressure for the Excursion Pro, so there is no honest way to estimate it, and neither manufacturer publishes a chamber volume, which is what a real calculation would need.
