Inflatable kayak or packraft: where the line falls
A packraft is built to be carried a long way to water. A kayak is built to be paddled once you get there. The Advanced Elements PackLite sits almost exactly on the boundary.

These two categories overlap at exactly one point, and our registry happens to contain the boat that sits on it. The Advanced Elements PackLite is sold as an inflatable kayak, weighs 4 lb, packs to 11 x 11 x 5 inches, and is 7 ft 10 in long. Every one of those numbers except the label is a packraft number.

The four-pound question
Fourteen pounds separate the PackLite from the next lightest boat in our registry. That is not a small increment at the top of a mountain, and it is the whole reason the packraft category exists.
What the PackLite gives up to get there is structure. Two psi in the side tubes and one in the floor means a hull that deforms under you, and 250 lb of capacity is the lowest here. It is a boat for getting across or down something you had to walk to, and it is the wrong boat for a windy afternoon on a lake -- which is why we tell first-time buyers to skip it.
Waterline length is why kayaks are faster
A hull moving through water has to push the water aside and let it close behind. A long, narrow hull with a fine entry does that with much less disturbance than a short round one. This is not a marketing distinction; it is why an 11 ft 3 in Chelan 120 covers distance a packraft-shaped boat simply cannot.
Packrafts accept that cost knowingly. Short is what packs small, and packing small is the entire point of the product.
Which to buy
Buy a packraft if
The walk to the water is the main event. If you are carrying the boat over a pass to reach an alpine lake, or hiking in and floating out, weight dominates every other consideration and nothing else comes close.
Buy an inflatable kayak if
The paddling is the main event and the packing is the compromise you accept to make it possible. If you are driving to a lake, flying to a coast, or keeping the boat in a cupboard between outings, you want the hull length -- and the travel page ranks the ones that still fit in a bag.

Advanced Elements PackLite
A 4 lb kayak that rolls to 11 x 11 x 5 inches. Nothing else in the category is close on either number, and the compromises are exactly the ones you would expect.
Four pounds and 27 linear inches packed is packraft territory on both numbers, and it is 7 ft 10 in long with a 250 lb capacity, which is kayak territory on neither. It behaves far more like a packraft than its category suggests.
The trade-off
At 2 psi in the side tubes and 1 psi in the floor there is very little structure here. It is a boat for getting somewhere remote, not for a windy afternoon on open water.

The bag is the seat and the seat is the bag. An 18 lb single that packs into a 31 x 9.25 x 17.5 inch backpack -- 57.75 linear inches, comfortably inside the checked-bag line, and you wear it to the water.
Eighteen pounds in a backpack that becomes the seat. It is heavier than any packraft but it has a kayak's hull length and a real seat, and it is the honest lightest end of the kayak category.
The trade-off
Sevylor publishes no working pressure for it. On a 21-gauge PVC boat that matters, because the difference between a hull that tracks and a hull that folds is a couple of tenths of a psi.

#3 · What a packraft cannot do
Aquaglide Chelan 120
A drop-stitch floor at 6 psi under 3 psi side tubes. That pressure difference is the whole design: a hard, flat floor to stand the boat up, soft tubes to keep the weight down.
Eleven feet three inches with a 6 psi drop-stitch floor. That is a hull that tracks and covers distance, and no packraft is shaped to do either. This is the far end of the comparison.

What is the difference between a packraft and an inflatable kayak?+
Purpose, expressed as hull shape. A packraft is short, round and light, designed to be carried in a backpack over a long distance and then floated down something. An inflatable kayak is longer, has a defined bow and stern, and is designed to be paddled efficiently. The Advanced Elements PackLite at 4 lb and 7 ft 10 in sits almost exactly on the boundary and behaves like the former.
Is a packraft better for backpacking?+
That is what it is for. The relevant comparison in our registry is the PackLite at 4 lb and 27 linear inches -- genuinely backpackable -- against the next lightest kayak, the Sevylor Quikpak K1 at 18 lb. Eighteen pounds is a lot to carry over a mountain, and 4 lb is not.
Can a packraft handle whitewater?+
Many are built specifically for it, with self-bailing floors and proper outfitting, and that is a real difference from the boats we hold specs for. None of the eight inflatable kayaks in our registry carries a whitewater rating from its manufacturer -- we wrote a whole page on why we will not rank them for it.
Which one is faster on flat water?+
The kayak, clearly, and the reason is waterline length. A longer hull with a defined entry moves through water more efficiently than a short round one, which is why the Chelan 120's 11 ft 3 in is a different experience from anything packraft-shaped. Packrafts are not slow by accident; they are short because short is what packs small.
