NIXY Newport G5 vs Bluefin Cruise 10'8

Most inflatable paddle board comparisons run on figures the manufacturers do not publish. This one does not have to. The NIXY Newport G5 and the Bluefin Cruise 10'8 are the only two boards in our registry that publish a warranty term, and both publish a volume in liters, which is the single most useful number on a paddle board spec sheet and the one most brands leave off.

That makes this a comparison you can check rather than take on trust, and it turns on one figure: 300 liters against 260.

The two boards on published figures

Volume is two numbers wearing one hat

Displacement first. A board floats what it displaces, so 300 liters is a more forgiving platform than 260 for a heavier paddler, a paddler with a dog, or anybody carrying gear. It is the reason the Newport feels planted and the reason it is the board we point beginners at.

Air second. That same 300 liters has to be filled and then compressed to 15 psi, and the free-air arithmetic is unforgiving about it: our model puts the Newport at 192 strokes on a 2 L dual-action hand pump and the Cruise at 167. The inflation-time guide shows the formula and its stated simplifications, and the short version is that volume is the term that dominates.

The capacity figure is the odd one

Read the table again and the interesting row is capacity against volume. The Bluefin carries a higher rating -- 330 lb against 300 lb -- from 40 fewer liters of board. On the arithmetic that is 1.27 lb per liter against 1.00.

We would not read that as the Bluefin being 27 percent better at floating people. Rated capacity is a number each manufacturer sets by its own method, and nobody in this category publishes what that method is. What it does tell you is that the two brands are not being conservative in the same way, which is worth knowing before you treat either rating as a hard limit. Our standing advice is to work to two thirds of any rating, and that advice matters more here than usual.

One chamber each, and what that means

Both of these are single-chamber boards, as is every inflatable paddle board in our registry. It is worth stating plainly because kayak buyers are used to three chambers as a minimum: on a drop-stitch board there is no redundancy, and a puncture is the end of the session rather than an inconvenience. So which one

Buy the Newport G5 if stability is the thing you are buying -- a first board, a heavier paddler, a board that carries a child or a dog. It is the widest and most buoyant board we cover, and you pay for it with about 25 extra strokes each time.

Buy the Cruise 10'8 if you want the longer warranty, the lighter board and the shorter pump session, and you are confident on your feet. It is the more efficient package on paper and the less forgiving one on the water.
