There is a real case for this boat and it is not a spec-sheet case. If you are not sure you will use a kayak more than twice, the rational purchase is the cheapest one that floats properly, and this is it.
What you are giving up is information, and it is worth being precise about how much.
What Intex publishes
An inflated size of 10 ft 3 in by 3 ft by 1 ft 8 in. A 400 lb maximum capacity. A product weight of 36.96 lb. Rugged vinyl construction with an inflatable I-beam floor. A Boston valve on each side. Two 86-inch aluminum oars and a high-output pump in the box.
What Intex does not
A packed size. A working pressure. A chamber count. A warranty term. A material thickness or denier.
The first two are the ones that cost you. Without a packed size you cannot know whether it fits your car or a checked bag until it arrives; without a working pressure you are inflating by feel on a boat whose entire structure is air pressure. Sevylor and both Intex models are the three kayaks here that publish no pressure, and it is a pattern rather than an oversight.
Thirty-seven pounds is a lot for ten feet
The Explorer K2 weighs 36.96 lb, almost exactly the same as the Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame at 36 lb -- which is a longer boat with aluminum ribs and seven chambers. It is also 10 lb heavier than the Driftsun Voyager 2, which is a similar-length tandem with 50 more pounds of capacity.
That is what vinyl costs. It is a heavier material than the PVC laminates and polyurethanes further up this registry, and it is a large part of why the boat is cheap.
Who this is for
Someone finding out whether they like kayaking, paddling on a lake, driving to the water. Three feet of beam is genuinely stable and 400 lb is enough for two adults on a calm day. As a first purchase to test an interest, it is a sensible one.
Who should skip it
Anybody flying, because you cannot check the packed size. Anybody who already knows they will keep paddling, because the Driftsun Voyager 2 is a better boat by most published measures. And anybody who wants to know what pressure they are inflating to.
