The Red Paddle Compact is lighter at 16 lb, and it is a 9'6 board. Among full-size boards, the GILI Air's 19 lb is the lightest thing here -- and the two inches of width it gives up to get there are the most consequential two inches on its spec sheet.
Where the weight went
Thirty-one inches wide against 32 or 33 for everything else. A narrower board is less material, less air and less weight, and it is also less resistant to the roll a paddle stroke puts into it.
For an experienced paddler that narrowness is closer to a feature: a narrower hull is quicker through the water and more responsive. For someone learning it is the difference between a board that feels planted and one that feels like it is paying attention to you.
Volume is where it stays sensible
Two hundred and twenty-five liters and a 280 lb rider limit is a real full-size board, not a stripped-down one. A 180 lb paddler is at 64 percent of rating, which is comfortably in the range where a board still sits high.
It also means less pumping than the bigger boards: about 144 strokes on a 2 L dual-action pump to reach 15 psi, against the NIXY Newport G5's 192.
"Military-grade PVC"
GILI describes the construction as military-grade PVC, which is a marketing phrase with no standard behind it. It is not a criticism of the board -- it may well be excellent material -- it is a criticism of the description, and it is a pattern across this whole category.
GILI publishes no packed size and no warranty term either, which puts it in the middle of this registry on disclosure: better than ROC, well short of iROCKER.
Who this is for, and who should skip it
Somebody who can already paddle, wants the lightest full-size board to carry, and would rather have a quicker board than a wider one.
Skip it as a first board. Thirty-three inches and 300 liters is what a first hour wants, and two pounds of extra carrying weight is a very cheap price for it.
